description: "This playbook Remediates the Service Execution technique using intelligence-driven Courses of Action (COA) defined by Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 team.\n \n***Disclaimer: This playbook does not simulate an attack using the specified technique, but follows the steps to remediation as defined by Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 team’s Actionable Threat Objects and Mitigations (ATOMs).\nTechniques Handled:\n- T1569.002: System Services: Service Execution\n\nKill Chain phases:\n- Execution\n\nMITRE ATT&CK Description:\nAdversaries may abuse the Windows service control manager to execute malicious commands or payloads. The Windows service control manager (services.exe) is an interface to manage and manipulate services.[1] The service control manager is accessible to users via GUI components as well as system utilities such as sc.exe and Net.\nPsExec can also be used to execute commands or payloads via a temporary Windows service created through the service control manager API.[2]\nAdversaries may leverage these mechanisms to execute malicious content. This can be done by either executing a new or modified service. This technique is the execution used in conjunction with Windows Service during service persistence or privilege escalation.\n\nPossible playbook uses:\n- The playbook can be used independently to handle and remediate the specific technique.\n- The playbook can be used as a part of the “Courses of Action - Defense Evasion” playbook to remediate techniques based on the kill chain phase.\n- The playbook can be used as a part of the “MITRE ATT&CK - Courses of Action” playbook, which can be triggered by different sources and accepts the technique MITRE ATT&CK ID as an input.\n" id: MITRE ATT&CK CoA - T1569.002 - Service Execution inputs: [] name: MITRE ATT&CK CoA - T1569.002 - Service Execution outputs: - contextPath: Handled.Techniques description: The techniques handled in this playbook type: unknown starttaskid: "0" tasks: "0": id: "0" ignoreworker: false nexttasks: '#none#': - "4" note: false quietmode: 0 separatecontext: false skipunavailable: false task: brand: "" id: d7ff4bab-2eb7-4148-8f72-331b004f3bf1 iscommand: false name: "" version: -1 description: '' taskid: d7ff4bab-2eb7-4148-8f72-331b004f3bf1 timertriggers: [] type: start view: |- { "position": { "x": 50, "y": -260 } } "1": id: "1" ignoreworker: false nexttasks: '#none#': - "3" note: false quietmode: 0 separatecontext: false skipunavailable: false task: brand: "" description: Manual - Configure XDR Behavioral Threat Protection under the Malware Security Profile. id: 03df3e44-b778-46c6-8507-11d3c193da88 iscommand: false name: Manual - Configure XDR Behavioral Threat Protection under the Malware Security Profile type: regular version: -1 taskid: 03df3e44-b778-46c6-8507-11d3c193da88 timertriggers: [] type: regular view: |- { "position": { "x": 50, "y": 220 } } "2": id: "2" ignoreworker: false note: false quietmode: 0 separatecontext: false skipunavailable: false task: brand: "" id: 5ab42224-203c-454c-8751-ca1be56a523f iscommand: false name: Done type: title version: -1 description: '' taskid: 5ab42224-203c-454c-8751-ca1be56a523f timertriggers: [] type: title view: |- { "position": { "x": 50, "y": 790 } } "3": id: "3" ignoreworker: false nexttasks: '#none#': - "6" note: false quietmode: 0 scriptarguments: append: simple: "true" key: simple: Handled.Techniques stringify: {} value: simple: '["T1035","T1569.002"]' separatecontext: false skipunavailable: false task: brand: "" description: Set a value in context under the key you entered. id: 8064fd3a-a1d9-4600-8ac2-23955a5fab35 iscommand: false name: Set technique handled script: Set type: regular version: -1 taskid: 8064fd3a-a1d9-4600-8ac2-23955a5fab35 timertriggers: [] type: regular view: |- { "position": { "x": 50, "y": 410 } } "4": id: "4" ignoreworker: false nexttasks: '#default#': - "5" "yes": - "1" note: false quietmode: 0 scriptarguments: brandname: simple: Cortex XDR - IR separatecontext: false skipunavailable: false task: brand: "" description: Returns 'yes' if integration brand is available.
